Interview with the Devising Artists:
ReVamp: What drew you to this project?
Wilder Artists: The idea of colliding artistic mediums with another theatre artist was immediately appealing to both of us. The act of sharing a body of knowledge and experience with a new collaborator creates opportunity for unexpected discoveries.
ReVamp: What vision are you bringing to the stage in your devised piece based off the source material of Grimm's fairy tale "Snow-White and Rose-Red"?
Wilder Artists: We are utilizing the story of Snow-White and Rose-Red as a launching pad to explore themes that we were immediately struck with upon reading the Grimm tale, in addition to other adaptations of the story. We were inspired to infuse these issues with depth and grit, zest and fire.
ReVamp: What relationship do you have to fairy tales?
Wilder Artists: They are inescapable! While the principles and lessons are well intended, they are problematic. These stories persist because of their iconic status, universality, being used to teach right and wrong. But there is opportunity for a rewrite, a modernization.
ReVamp: If your life was a Grimm fairy tale, what would the title be?
Wilder Artists: This Is How Girls Die
ReVamp: How is this story still relevant today?
Wilder Artists: Snow-White and Rose-Red is deceptive - it is a story dominated by women, and yet not really about them. These girls are acted upon with all agency removed from them.
ReVamp: What is your goal as an artist?
Wilder Artists: To reflect the stories of our time, to be in the present, to share perspectives that are unseen.
